The rise of the Labubu meme coin (LABUBU) is turning heads across the crypto world after the token exploded more than 5,900% in just two weeks, riding the wave of a global frenzy for the collectible Labubu dolls. With retail outlets now pulling the toys from shelves to prevent physical altercations, fans have found a new outlet: buying the token.

Originally launched on Pump.fun in October 2024, the LABUBU coin initially surged to a $10 million market cap before retracing and stagnating under $1 million for months. But a viral boom in Labubu toy popularity, driven by TikTok trends, blind-box culture, and celebrity endorsements like Rihanna, has reignited interest in the meme coin.

According to DEX Screener, LABUBU’s market cap skyrocketed from just $814,710 to $49.16 million in a matter of weeks. The token has since dipped slightly, now trading around a $41.55 million valuation, marking a modest 15% pullback from its peak.

Store Mayhem Pushes Fans Toward Digital Collectibles

The renewed hype around Labubu began spilling into the real world when UK retailers were forced to pull Labubu monster bag charms from stores. The move followed a series of chaotic incidents: customers camped outside stores, clashed with staff, and even fought one another for a chance to buy the ultra-trendy plush toys.

“We’re suspending sales in our stores to prevent any potential safety issues,” said Pop Mart, the official retailer of Labubu dolls, in a statement to BBC News.

What Is Labubu?

Labubu is a quirky hybrid of a bunny rabbit and a monster, typically sold in blind boxes, where buyers don’t know which version of the toy they’re getting. These collectibles became instant fashion statements, especially once celebrities began flaunting them in public.

The character originated in 2015, created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung as part of his picture book series, The Monsters. But it wasn’t until late 2024 and early 2025 that the Labubu phenomenon went viral, fueled by social media, fashion trends, and TikTok unboxings.

From Toy to Token: A Cultural Shift

The intersection of pop culture and blockchain is once again on display. As access to physical Labubu dolls became restricted, fans pivoted to the next best thing: owning a piece of the frenzy through the LABUBU meme coin.

“I bought $LABUBU because having Labubus just wasn’t enough,” tweeted LadyETH, a pseudonymous trader and devoted Labubu fan.
